What a UX Audit Is and When to Run One

Quick answer: a UX audit is a structured review of your product to find usability problems that hurt conversion, activation or retention. Run one before a redesign, after metrics drop, or once a year as a health check. The output is a prioritized list of issues, each with evidence and a recommended fix. Audits are especially useful when a product has grown quickly and different teams have added features without a shared design system.

An audit is cheaper than a full redesign and often finds quick wins you can ship in days. Funnel analysis is a good starting point. Compare each step of sign-up, onboarding and checkout to see where users drop off most.

How to Run the Audit

Set goals first. Decide which metric matters most, such as trial-to-paid conversion, and which flows affect it. Review data. Look at funnels, drop-off points, session recordings and support tickets to see where users struggle. Check consistency too. Different button styles, labels and layouts for the same action confuse users and slow them down.

Run a heuristic review. Walk through each key flow and check it against usability principles: clear feedback, consistency, error prevention, recognition over recall and accessibility. Talk to users. A handful of short interviews explains the why behind the numbers. Accessibility checks belong in every audit, including contrast, keyboard navigation and form labels.

Prioritize and Act

Score each issue by impact and effort. Fix high-impact, low-effort issues first. Group related fixes into design requests and test the changes against your baseline metrics. Present findings visually, with screenshots and short notes, so the whole team can understand the problems quickly.

Kites Design runs UX audits for SaaS products and designs the fixes on the same monthly plan. Book a free consultation to start. Re-run key parts of the audit after changes ship, to confirm that metrics improved.
