Scalable
Design
Systems
Learn how to build a design system that scales with your SaaS, from auditing your UI to tokens, components, documentation and governance.

Step 1: Audit What You Have
Quick answer: to build a scalable design system, audit your current UI, define foundations as tokens, build core components with variants, document how to use them, and set up a simple process for changes. Start with an interface inventory. Screenshot every button, input and card in your product. You will likely find many slightly different versions of the same thing. During the audit, note which inconsistencies cause real problems for users, such as buttons that look clickable in one place and not in another.
Choose the best version of each and use it as the standard. Agree on naming early with developers. Shared names make handoff faster and reduce confusion.

Step 2: Foundations and Components
Define design tokens for color, type, spacing and radius. Tokens keep design and code in sync and make theming, like dark mode, much easier. Build core components first: buttons, inputs, selects, checkboxes, cards, modals and tables. Include every state: default, hover, focus, disabled, error and loading. Document responsive behavior, showing how each component adapts on mobile, tablet and desktop.
Use auto layout and variants in Figma so components adapt to content, and match names to your code components. Plan for theming from the start if you expect dark mode or white-label versions of your product.
Step 3: Document and Govern
Write short usage guidelines with do and don't examples for each component. Agree on how new components get added and who approves changes. Even a lightweight process prevents drift. Track adoption by checking how many screens use system components, and replace one-off designs over time.
Treat the system as a product with its own roadmap. Kites Design can build your system and keep it updated as part of a monthly subscription. Celebrate contributions. When designers and developers suggest improvements, the system stays alive and useful.
